I lived in Hodder Square from 1990 to 1992. best years of my life - everyone else lived there too and post hacienda or wherever was just spent dropping round your mates' flats! Possibly via a quick detour to one of the Epping Walk parties! Spent mucho time lounging around the adventure playground at sunrise! I moved out too soon to get rehoused in one of the new flats - should have stayed but the cockroaches got too much - little devils! Now when I get the bus into town I lose my bearings - can't work out where's where!

Ah man, some of these pictures are amazing! Cant find anything like this anywhere else on the net! I lived on Hunmanby Ave & Hulme St, right near Proctors YC between the ages of 3-11 (1979-1987). What a play ground I had.. place was insane.. wouldnt change it for the world though. Used to love hanging around the crescents with my friends.. dangerous fun!

Hi
It's great seeing all these pics of old hulme, brings back some great memories.

I use to run two pirate radio station...

Frontline Radio 101.45 & FLR Soul 100.7

Both out of Charles Barry Cresent, just down the way from the Kitchen.

The cresents were like a creative hot bed of talent, every ten paces you come across a new group rehersing, Hulme was filled with musicians, bands and studio.

As a pirate broadcaster it was like heaven, when ever we got raided by the DTI we could always get away by just grabing the eqipment and running into a neighbour or someone else flat, It was so cool living in hulme in the late 80's and early 90's

I'm so glad that someone is documenting this part of our history

Thank you

One Love
Lloyd Frontline

Hulme 1975 - 1987

God it's amazing to look at these pictures. I was brought up in Hulme and although I have a fair memory of good and dark times experienced there, I am amazed by these pictures which remind me of what a fucking shithole it was..... You can't knock the power of nostalgia though.
Really interesting to find this page, I shall read more into my cultural heritage. If you can suggest any good books that would be cool.

Nice one!

Louise.

Crikey good to see those pics, I used to go on holiday there to visit my Gran who managed St Wilfs. Bit of a contrast from the north of Scotland where I lived at the time.

This brought the memories flooding back, especially the picture of Felix! i lived on the top of Charles Barry and on William Kent (I think, I can't remember!). I spent a lot of time in the Spinners where there was a mermaid behind the bar. Every day I ate at Honeys on Great Western Road. My memories of the place are good, except for the day the Spinners closed forever. After that I never went back. Drove past it a few years ago but I wasn't tempted to go see how much it had changed and I knew I wouldn't find any old friends there. RIP

wow this site has brought so many memories flooding back, was born in hulme and lived there til iwas 23 in 88,then got a job and moved portsmouth way. went to birley and in 82 lived in robert adam, top floor where i could see the pool table in the spinners, used to get stoned in there every night b4 gettin a lock-in at the eagle, new felix and is 3 dogs i think he had in the end, stix ripped everyone off at least once but nice guy, saturday afternoons in the platford and does anyone remember the boat turned nightclub god that was shite. i no hulme was a shit hole but late 70's to late 80's there was no place like it,hulme carnival wasn't up to much but loved the moss side one, the clubs were fab as well, the reano and psv. i luv animal but would of loved to see one of the dobernams fall off the henry royce,i was convince they were gonna jump on my head one day. it's nearly 20yrs since i left god where as all the time gone? but theres not a week goes by without me thinking of that time and the people,so so many proper characters,i even look back with fondness at my four yrs in the cresents, not so much thou about the human shit in the lifts, even had lump in my throat the day they finally came down-crazy eh. glad i got out before the smack got riffe everywhere thou, mainly puff man myself with the odd acid or e if i was heading to kloisters or brewsters, another memory just popped in my head and that was 10p bag of broken biscuits from the preceint, god that was value, well its 3.40am and up for work in a bit, really glad i stumbled on this site its really fab and its gettin bookmarked, cheers and best wishes to everyone who shared the hulme expeariance,

I lived on the top deck of Robert Adam Crescent. Chris, Rich, Giny were along the way at 536. I got my hi-fi robbed when the smackheads from below managed to jemmy the kitchen window open. Ray from next door said he heard something and came out with his stick, but didn't realise they were already in. Happy days?

Great contribution from Kelzo. Respect for remembering so much stuff!

It all comes flooding back on this site, innit. Ah, the Eagle. I remember watching Liverpool fans riot in Heysel stadium, live on the Eagle's TV screen. That was surreal. Marlene. The Spinners. I played a lot of pool. The PSV was awesome for many years. Who the hell let them pull it down? (The Council, that's who.)

It wasn't all good in the crescents. But there was a special spirit in spite of the shitty infrastructure.

That's all for now.

Cheers, Nigel.
