MOVED TO HULME IN 1969-1970 CAN'T REMEMBER IS WAS ONLY 3. HULME IS WHERE I LEARNT MOST OF MY LIFE SKILLS, SOME GOOD SOME BAD. I LIVED IN MALLOWDALE CLOSE ON THE 2ND FLOOR NUMBER 31, IT WAS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PLACE TO GROW UP. WE HAD ADVENTURE PLAYGROUNDS (NO CHANCE OF THEM NOWADAYS). PROCTORS YOUTH CLUB, LEAF STREET BATHS WHERE I LEARNT TO SWIM, IT WAS 2P ADMISSION. THEN AFTER THAT SHUT MOSS SIDE LEISURE CENTRE, 10P ON A SATURDAY MORNING AND YOU COULD SWIM, TABLE TENNIS, BADMINTON, WEIGHTLIFTING. HULME WAS SUCH A FRIENDLY PLACE IN THE 70'S, REMEMBER THE QUEEN DRIVING THROUGH IN 77 OR WAS IT 78, ALL OF US WAVING FLAGS, WE HAD A PARTY ON OUR LANDING, I SUPPLIED THE MUSIC. I WENT TO ST WILFRIDS, I WAS A BIT OF A SWAT, HEAD PREFECT, ALTAR BOY AT ST WILFRIDS CHURCH, BUT WE DID GET BOUGHT HALF A CIDER FOR OUR TROUBLE. TOP TIMES, TOP MATES, GOT IN A BIT OF TROUBLE BUT ALL PART OF GROWING UP IN HULME. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE THAT REMEMBERS ME OR ANY OF MY FAMILY. JUST POST A MESSAGE ON THIS SITE. CHEERS.

sweet memories.i lived in the crescents from 86. ten years of no bills..all free.spinners and eagle pubs were focal points as well as the psv club.all sorts of folks.a breath of fresh air for many who loathed the rat race.awesome times.hulme was an island of fun and debauchery. as many flats as you want.a cafe doing a three course meal for a quid![true fact],some of the best musicians like a guy called gerald.a real mix of different folks like ; anarchist squat punks, brew crew, hiphop crazed crowley fiends, mancs on e ,mad kids with sticks and no cash.etc.seemed to be mugger free until the crescents went..went darkside after..word went out to the surrounding areas that badboys could visit n mug at will. no island gets left alone, all in all ,magic days

Hello All.
I was born in Salford in 1947 and moved to Hulme when I was really young.
The street was called Sutherland Street and we moved there so that Mum could get a posh house when it was demolished. We were told that it was coming down in 6 months when we did the exchange, but we finished being there a lot longer.
It was a 2 up 2 down supposedly but the kitchen was only a scullery under the stairs.
The loo was outside.
There was Mum and Dad and 4 kids I dont know how they managed looking back, but they were fun times.
The kids bedroom was over the entry. When we were all too excited to sleep and we heard people going through the entry we thought it was the "bogey man" and soon went to sleep.
I remember going to St Georges Primary School. I cant remember when I started but it is the only school I remember before we moved so I either started there before I left Salford and carried on when I moved to Hulme or only started when I lived in Hulme.
I am wondering where the School is in connection to Salford and Hulme and if it is still standing?
I would love to get a photo of it if possible for my family tree scrap book.

Lived in South Manchester and often visited Hulme between 1988-1991+. Am so glad to see that there is some record of those times. The place should never have been allowed but, what creativity, innovation, a home for many who had no home, and a starting block to go off and do other things. It definately provided a political and social ideal and sense of community that I have carried with me since then. I know that it was of that moment in time, and the factors that contibuted to creating a place like that no longer exist but, anyone who was involved will miss it and be glad to have been part of it. Obviously there was a shit side too! I remember the graffitii "Hulme Free State" and "now is the winter of our disco in a tent" - along with dogs; travellers (Andy and Nick Riley, Donna); The Hulmanoids (Dave and Spanner, Pete); The PSV; Blackpool Dave, Dougie, Bonzo,Chris and Mandy; Shell from Shetland; Monday night at the Ritz; punx picnic; and the dogs of heaven farewell to Hulme.

born and raised in hulme, what a place to grow up i loved it at the time and have so many memories some good some bad some tragic but all part of groing up in the playground in the sky as isay i loved it at the time but could never live like that again but then it was all id ever known.
Being a teenager there was brilliant, the best weed id ever smoked, some wicked acid and partys in the crescent every night and some of the happiest days of my life. not the most normal way to live a life but then hulme was no normal place.
i moved from hulme when my son was born cos i didnt want him groing up round there but ill always remember how it used to be, if you were to write a book about hulme nobody would believe half of what you said cos it was truly unbelievable.
